Historic Landmark - Lynchburg Treasure - Architectural Gem

Built in 1905 as the Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg's first public library and second oldest in Virginia, this impressive building is situated on Rivermont Avenue near downtown Lynchburg. One of Lynchburgâs few examples of the formal Beaux-Arts style, it boasts a formal stairway leading from the avenue to a grand portico with colossal columns paired with Ionic capitals. A large courtyard ornamented with balusters provides a panoramic view the Rivermont bridge and downtown Lynchburg. The large, lighted dome is impressive from the outside as well as the inside where it can be viewed from the grand three story foyer. Wall surfaces are adorned with decorative garlands, cartouches, enriched moldings, and sculptural ornament. In 1987, the library was relocated and the building has since been used as an educational center.
